I’ve always loved making things by hand. In the past, I would have described myself as crafty and quite the DIYer but not as an artist. That all changed about a year ago when I stumbled upon some YouTube videos of artists demonstrating fluid art, commonly referred to as acrylic paint pouring. After watching endless hours of videos, I knew I had to give it a try. The process had me mesmerized and the results were intriguing...and so my journey began.

Acrylic paint pouring was stimulating but relaxing, easy yet incredibly challenging, simple and also complicated. From day one, I was hooked. It was satisfying in a way none of my other hobbies ever were. I couldn’t stop pouring paint! My basement was quickly transformed into a studio and within a few months, canvases of artwork covered the walls. Fluid art had become more than a hobby, it was an obsession.

Creating pieces that were appreciated for their beauty, the artistic technique or the emotional response evoked was fun and rewarding but for me, something was still missing. I started pouring paint on surfaces other than canvas. I was pouring on things like tables, stools, lazy susans and glass. I found that creating artistic designs that are fun, funky and useful was truly exhilarating and so FUNKional Art by Missy was born. FUNKtional Art is unique art with a purpose and reflects the evolution of my artistic journey.

As I continue on my creative journey, I realized that just like the saying that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder', art lives in the heart of the creator and therefore, I am  an artist.

Fluid art is the process of pouring acrylic paints onto a canvas ( or other surface) to create unique pieces of artwork.
Liquid or soft body acrylic paints are best for paint pouring because of their consistency. There are two options for liquid acrylics; artist quality acrylics or craft acrylics.  Typically, a  pouring medium is added to the paint to improve the fluidity.  There are pre-made pouring mediums and paint extenders available as well as home-made recipes.
Dozens…..and new techniques are created every day by fluid art enthusiasts!  Many of the techniques are defined by the process. Examples include Straight Pour, Dirty Pour, Flip Cup, Open Cup, Dutch Pour, Ring Pour, Galaxy Pour, Swipe, Bloom Technique, Ninja Swipe, Kiss, Dip and Reverse Dip and Injection. Other techniques are defined by the ‘tool’ being used. Some of these include: Funnel Pour, Bottle Bottom, Sink Strainer, Balloon, and Mallet Smash.  
There are books available but in my opinion, the best way to learn more about the art of paint pouring is to look up YouTube videos. There are a variety of artists that have technique videos and tutorials that you can watch at your convenience.

There are also numerous Paint Pouring Groups on FaceBook where enthusiasts share their work, their frustrations and their questions. The groups are very supportive and include fluid artists of all levels.

 I LOVE my Funktional Art Lazy Susan! I was gifted the “Blue and Silver” lazy Susan and I can’t say enough about it. Everyone who comes to my house compliments it! The color combinations are gorgeous and looking at it feels like I’m looking into the ocean. The art is so unique and I love the color and beauty it adds to my table. So far, I’ve used to as a charcuterie board, a cake stand, and a centerpiece! I am hoping to commission some wall art soon to compliment! I keep checking the website to look for new pieces! Unrelated to the actual art - I should also add that I am so pleased with the quality of the lazy Susan itself. It’s strong, smooth and you can tell it’s made well.
